Akshaya Tritiya 2019: India’s Gold Market Shines Bright with Strong Sales Growth
The auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya marked a significant turning point for India’s gold and jewelry sector, with retailers nationwide reporting a notable uptick in consumer footfalls and sales volumes. Jewelers enthusiastically shared figures indicating up to a 25 percent increase in sales volume compared to the previous year, signaling a robust recovery for an industry that had faced considerable headwinds in recent times. This surge in demand underscores a renewed positive sentiment among consumers, driven by a confluence of favorable market conditions and deep-seated cultural traditions.
Industry sources highlighted several key factors contributing to this golden resurgence. Foremost among them was the prevailing lower retail prices of gold, which were trading approximately 7 percent below last year’s rates, hovering around Rs 32,000 per 10 grams. This price advantage made gold more accessible and attractive to a broad spectrum of buyers. Coupled with this, the ongoing marriage season provided a powerful impetus, as gold and jewelry purchases are intrinsically linked to wedding ceremonies in India. Despite Akshaya Tritiya falling on a working day and the prevailing high temperatures, these positive drivers successfully stimulated consumer sentiment, translating into bustling activity across jewelry stores.
A Market Rebound: Overcoming Past Challenges
For several years prior, the Indian jewelry sector had grappled with significant challenges, including the transformative impacts of demonetization and the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). These policy changes had acted as major deterrents, dampening consumer spending and disrupting market dynamics. Consequently, this year’s Akshaya Tritiya stood out as the first occasion since 2016 to demonstrate such a visible and substantial volume uptick, indicating a vital stabilization and a promising recovery path for the industry. The resilience of the market and the enduring cultural significance of gold once again proved pivotal in attracting buyers.
Saurabh Gadgil, National Vice-President of the India Bullion & Jewellers Association and Chairman of the renowned PN Gadgil Jewellers, expressed immense optimism regarding the positive market sentiment. “Footfalls are good as there is a positive sentiment. Despite being a working day and the sweltering heat, there has been a steady stream of people coming in to pick up pre-booked jewellery and also some token items from the morning,” he noted. Gadgil further elaborated on the daily patterns, explaining, “The momentum gathered more steam after office hours, and we expect more pick in the volume through the rest of the night.” This observation highlights the dedication of consumers to partake in the auspicious occasion, adapting their schedules to make their purchases.
Gadgil also shed light on the specific preferences observed during Akshaya Tritiya. He stated that the day typically sees a higher demand for lightweight jewelry, wearable items, and gold and silver coins, alongside an expected surge in wedding jewelry purchases. This diverse demand profile reflects both the traditional belief in buying gold for prosperity and the practical needs of the ongoing marriage season. With such encouraging trends, Gadgil confidently predicted, “We are very positive and are expecting around 25 percent volume growth over last year.” This projection underscored the overall industry’s confidence in the sustained consumer interest.
Nationwide Enthusiasm and Regional Variances
The positive sentiment was echoed across the entire nation, signifying a broad-based revival in the Indian gold market. Anantha Padmanabhan, Chairman of the All-India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council, reported receiving “very positive reports from across the country.” He further detailed the evolving purchasing patterns, stating, “We are receiving very encouraging reports on high footfalls and the momentum started picking up from the evening, being a working day and also due to the heat wave conditions during the day.” This consistent feedback from various regions underscored the widespread nature of the festive demand, demonstrating gold’s universal appeal in India.
Padmanabhan highlighted the outstanding performance of the Southern region, which led the country in sales, closely followed by the Northern states. “The Southern region has done extremely well, followed by the North. Due to the long wedding season, gold and jewellery sales have been encouraging so far this year. Customers are also benefiting from low prices,” he explained. This regional disparity often reflects varying cultural practices and purchasing power, with South India traditionally being a robust market for gold. The stable prices throughout the period were a significant catalyst for continued consumer interest and purchasing decisions across all demographics, fostering growth in both urban and rural areas.
Insights from Leading Retailers Drive Market Confidence
Leading jewelry retail chains also reported impressive sales figures, reinforcing the overall positive market outlook. T.S. Kalyanaraman, Chairman of Kalyan Jewellers, attributed their strong sales to the prevailing stable prices and positive consumer sentiments. He emphasized the strategic advantage of the extended wedding season in 2019, noting, “There are many more auspicious wedding days in 2019 as opposed to last year, and families prefer to initiate their wedding purchases on Akshaya Tritiya, so there was also traction with our wedding line too.” This highlights the importance of cultural alignment and careful planning in driving significant sales volumes, particularly for high-value items like wedding jewelry, which often involve substantial investments.
Kalyanaraman further detailed regional buying trends observed by his chain. “In the metros, we have had more young first-time buyers making token purchases, while in non-metros the sentiment continues to be positive. The Southern markets have done well with Kerala and Karnataka taking the lead. Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, and MP have also responded well,” he elaborated. This nuanced view indicates a broadening customer base, with younger generations in urban centers making symbolic purchases, while traditional demand remains strong and consistent in smaller towns and rural areas, showcasing the diverse appeal of gold across different demographics.
Sandeep Kulhalli, Senior Vice-President for Sales & Marketing at Tanishq, one of India’s largest jewelry retailers, confirmed the healthy market performance. He stated that Tanishq experienced “healthy double-digits volume spike compared to last year and expect volumes to grow further over the rest of the hours.” This robust growth from a market leader like Tanishq provides a strong indicator of the overall industry’s positive trajectory and its ability to capitalize on festive demand.
Aditya Pethe, Director of WHP Jewellers, emphasized the deeply rooted sentimental values driving consumer behavior, suggesting that the decision to buy gold transcends mere economic calculations. “People are driven by sentimental values and not just market scenarios,” he remarked. He added, “This year we started seeing footfall from the moment we opened the stores. People are buying jewellery and coins and are coming with pre-decided needs. Our sales are up 20 percent.” This insight underscores the profound cultural significance of Akshaya Tritiya, where tradition often transcends purely economic considerations, fostering pre-planned purchases and consistent demand.
Ishu Datwani, founder of Anmol, noted a consistent upward trend in sales, indicating that the positive sentiment had been building since Gudi Padwa, another auspicious festival. “Footfalls have been good since morning and there has been a good demand for small and big-ticket items especially in diamond jewellery and even wedding jewellery. We are expecting 25 percent increase in sales today,” he commented. The mention of strong demand for diamond jewelry suggests a growing diversification in consumer preferences and an increasing willingness to invest in higher-value items beyond traditional gold, reflecting evolving tastes and rising disposable incomes.
Kumar Jain of UT Zavery’s highlighted a particularly rare astrological alignment contributing to the heightened enthusiasm. “This particular muhurat on the Akshaya Tritiya comes after 17 long years so people want to take advantage of it,” he explained. This unique confluence of auspicious timing undoubtedly added an extra layer of urgency and cultural importance to the day’s purchases. Jain also noted, “Mostly people are coming to pick up their pre-booked wedding jewellery. However, many are also coming in to buy token items for the day. As polling is over and there is free movement of bullion now. We expect 25 percent sales growth.” The completion of polling removing any logistical hurdles for bullion movement further facilitated trade, ensuring smooth transactions.
Bullion and Digital Transactions Also See Impressive Growth
Beyond finished jewelry, the bullion market also registered impressive gains, mirroring the positive sentiment in the retail sector. Vidit Garg, Director of the Kundan group, reported a substantial increase, with their volume having risen by “around 40 percent till 4 pm.” This significant growth in bullion sales indicates strong investor confidence and a traditional preference for pure gold as a secure store of value, especially during times of economic uncertainty.
Pankaj Khanna of Khanna Gems, a prominent bullion trader, also noted robust activity, particularly in the digital space. He stated that their “volume rose 20 percent in offline bullion demand while had over 1,200 transactions for gold and silver coins online.” This dual growth in both physical and online bullion transactions highlights the evolving purchasing habits of Indian consumers, who are increasingly comfortable with digital platforms for their traditional investments, broadening the market reach for gold and silver products.
Akshaya Tritiya: A Symbol of Prosperity and Sustained Demand for Indian Gold
Akshaya Tritiya, a portmanteau of ‘Akshaya’ meaning eternal or never diminishing, and ‘Tritiya’ meaning third, signifies everlasting prosperity and good fortune. According to Hindu mythology, any venture initiated or asset purchased on this day is believed to bring enduring success and wealth. The tradition of buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya is deeply ingrained in Indian culture, serving not just as an investment but as a ritualistic act to invoke prosperity into one’s home and life. This cultural bedrock provides a stable foundation for gold demand, irrespective of short-term market fluctuations, making it a pivotal event for the Indian jewelry industry every single year.
The strong performance on this auspicious day serves as a powerful indicator of the resilient and optimistic outlook for India’s gold and jewelry sector. The combination of favorable gold prices, the inherent cultural significance of Akshaya Tritiya, an extended wedding season, and renewed consumer confidence has successfully driven a significant surge in sales. This period not only brought much-needed relief and revenue to jewelers but also set a positive precedent for the upcoming months, suggesting a period of sustained growth and recovery for this vital segment of the Indian economy. The clear market rebound indicates that despite past challenges, the allure of gold and the power of tradition continue to shine brightly in the hearts and investment portfolios of Indian consumers. Comparing this year’s success to the previous year’s market dynamics provides a useful contrast to fully appreciate the scale and significance of this positive shift.
