GJEPC Drives Regional Trade: 4th India-SAARC-Middle East Summit in Chennai

India’s Gem and Jewellery Industry: A Beacon of Global Excellence and Strategic Growth

The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), the apex body dedicated to fostering the growth and promotion of India’s illustrious gem and jewellery sector, consistently champions initiatives aimed at bolstering exports and strengthening global trade relationships. In a testament to this unwavering commitment, GJEPC meticulously organized the 4th edition of the India SAARC Middle East Buyer Seller Meet (BSM) in the vibrant city of Chennai. This crucial three-day event, held from April 28th to 30th, served as a pivotal platform, masterfully showcasing the breathtaking diversity and unparalleled craftsmanship of Indian plain gold jewellery and exquisite diamond-studded jewellery. The meticulously structured BSM facilitated pre-scheduled, focused one-to-one meetings, each lasting approximately 30 minutes, between discerning international buyers and reputable Indian sellers during the initial two days, culminating in an open exhibition format on the final day, allowing for broader networking and exploration.

Pramod Kumar Agrawal, the esteemed Chairman of GJEPC, underscored the profound historical and contemporary success of the Indian gem and jewellery industry in captivating and catering to the nuanced preferences of markets across the Middle East and various Asian nations. He remarked, “The Indian gem & jewellery industry has not only successfully catered but has also consistently adapted to the unique tastes and evolving market needs of the Middle East and Asian countries. India has firmly established itself as the preferred sourcing destination for high-quality gems and jewellery on a global scale.” This assertion is robustly supported by impressive growth figures, particularly in the exports of gold and studded jewellery, which surged to a remarkable USD 12.03 billion in FY19, marking a substantial increase of 24.36% compared to USD 9.67 billion in FY18. Mr. Agrawal emphasized that the India SAARC – Middle East BSM is a strategic endeavor designed to further cultivate and enhance these vital trade relationships and stimulate business expansion. He further highlighted the exceptional array of products buyers could anticipate, encompassing a vast spectrum of plain and studded jewellery, including intricate pieces adorned with delicate filigree work, breathtaking jewellery embellished with a myriad of precious stones, and innovative, feather-light designs that epitomize modern elegance.

From Diamond Dominance to Jewellery Prowess: India’s Strategic Export Focus

Having already cemented its indisputable leadership position in the cutting and polishing of diamonds, India is now strategically channeling its efforts towards significantly strengthening its jewellery exports. This shift is predicated on the understanding that jewellery represents a dynamic and high-growth sector poised for substantial expansion in the foreseeable future. The sheer scale of India’s contribution to the global gem and jewellery trade is profound, with total exports accounting for an impressive USD 40 billion in the fiscal year 2018-19. The leading export destinations, which form the bedrock of this success, include Hong Kong (contributing 35% of exports), the USA (25%), and the UAE (25%), underscoring the global reach and demand for Indian craftsmanship. This strategic evolution underscores India’s ambition to become an all-encompassing powerhouse across the entire value chain of the gem and jewellery industry, moving beyond raw material processing to finished product excellence.

The Indian Gems & Jewellery industry stands as a magnificent embodiment of the “Make in India” initiative, serving as a shining example of indigenous manufacturing excellence and global competitiveness. Its economic impact is colossal, contributing approximately 7% to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and an impressive 11.99% to the nation’s merchandise exports. Beyond economic figures, the industry is a massive employment generator, providing livelihoods for a substantial workforce of 5 million individuals (50 lakh), thereby playing a critical role in socio-economic development. India’s supremacy in the realm of Cut & Polished diamonds is particularly remarkable and globally unparalleled, especially considering the absence of a single diamond mine within its borders. This speaks volumes about the nation’s exceptional skill, technological advancement, and intricate processing capabilities. Astonishingly, India processes 93% of the world’s polished diamonds, meaning that a staggering 14 out of every 15 diamonds set in jewellery worldwide are meticulously processed in India. This monumental effort translates to the polishing of over one billion stones each year, a testament to the industry’s sheer capacity and unwavering dedication to precision and quality.

Chairman Agrawal further elaborated on the industry’s proactive approach to innovation and ethical conduct. He stated, “Indian manufacturers have been consistently investing in cutting-edge technology and rigorous manpower training to create exquisitely manufactured jewels that boast skillfully crafted designs and utilize high-end materials, all of which are highly sought after across international markets.” He also proudly affirmed the Indian jewellery industry’s unwavering commitment to ethical business practices, a cornerstone of its global reputation. “Exporters here undertake business lawfully, adhering to all prescribed norms and practices with utmost diligence and transparency,” Mr. Agrawal added, emphasizing the industry’s dedication to integrity and sustainability, which builds trust and fosters long-term relationships with international partners.

BSMs: Catalysts for Connection and Trade Expansion

Dilip Shah, Convener of International Exhibitions, meticulously articulated the inherent value and unique efficacy of the Buyer Seller Meets (BSMs). He remarked, “The distinct nature and highly effective format of BSMs position them as the most demanding and rewarding forums for conducting business among discerning buyers and dedicated exhibitors.” Mr. Shah expressed optimism regarding the event’s outcome, stating, “I am profoundly hopeful that the 4th edition of this BSM will replicate the resounding success of its predecessors and significantly contribute to further cultivating trade relationships and augmenting business opportunities.” This particular BSM maintained a sharp focus on jewellery, attracting a robust participation of 31 exhibitors representing various regions across India. These exhibitors presented their diverse collections to an impressive contingent of 78 buyers, hailing from a wide array of international countries, including Algeria, Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Egypt, Fiji, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, New Zealand, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, UAE, and the UK. Such a diverse international presence underscores the global appeal of Indian jewellery and the effectiveness of GJEPC’s outreach efforts.

India’s rich cultural heritage profoundly influences its jewellery craftsmanship, making it one of the largest and most sought-after exporters of gold jewellery in the world. The nation is renowned for its unparalleled creativity and diverse array of jewellery-making styles, each steeped in tradition and artistic brilliance. These include, but are not limited to, the intricate Kundan work, the vibrant Meenakari enameling, meticulous Handcarving, the distinctive Bidriware, spiritually significant Temple Jewellery, delicate Filigree Jewellery, and the elaborate Jadau Jewellery, among many other captivating styles. This kaleidoscopic range ensures that Indian jewellery caters to a vast spectrum of aesthetic preferences, from the classically traditional to the elegantly contemporary, making it a perennial favorite on the global stage. Each piece tells a story, reflecting centuries of artisanal mastery passed down through generations.

Charting the Future: Mumbai Jewellery Park and Global Outreach

In a far-sighted initiative designed to propel this dynamic industry to unprecedented heights, GJEPC, with invaluable support from the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, is poised to establish a groundbreaking Jewellery Park in Mumbai. This ambitious and strategically vital venture is conceived to provide comprehensive and effective support to jewellery manufacturers and traders who are keen on expanding their operations or making new investments in India. Whether the objective is to launch a new business or substantially strengthen an existing one, the Jewellery Park will offer a world-class ecosystem, benchmarking against highly successful models created in countries like China, Turkey, and Thailand. This integrated facility aims to streamline operations, foster innovation, and create a conducive environment for growth. The Mumbai Jewellery Park project is not only an industrial endeavor but also a significant economic catalyst, estimated to generate direct employment for an impressive cohort of around 1,00,000 workers, thereby contributing substantially to job creation and economic prosperity in the region.

Over several decades, GJEPC has played an instrumental role in consolidating the formerly fragmented efforts of India’s vast Gem & Jewellery trade. Through a series of strategic and innovative promotional initiatives, both within India and across the globe, GJEPC has effectively elevated the industry’s profile and market access. The Council is the proud organizer of several key domestic trade fairs that serve as cornerstones of the Indian jewellery calendar, including the prestigious India International Jewellery Show (IIJS), IIJS Signature, and the India Gem & Jewellery Machinery Expo (IGJME). Beyond national borders, GJEPC diligently organizes and spearheads India Pavilions—enabling numerous Indian companies to participate collectively under the unifying GJEPC banner—at a multitude of leading international shows. These include globally renowned events such as JCK Las Vegas, Baselworld, Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair, Vicenzaoro, Jewellery Arabia, and many others worldwide, showcasing India’s finest to a truly global audience. The Council’s proactive agenda for the year includes a series of specialized Buyer-Seller Meets, strategically planned to target specific markets and product categories.
