Botswana and Angola Join World Federation of Diamond Bourses as Affiliate Members

The governments of Botswana and Angola have formally joined the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) as affiliate members. This move marks an important development in the relationship between diamond-producing countries and the international diamond trading community, signaling closer coordination on trade, regulation and industry standards.

The admission was announced at the WFDB International Summit in Gaborone on May 18, where delegates highlighted the potential benefits of bringing producer governments into the WFDB framework.

First Governments to Join the WFDB

This represents a historic first for the WFDB, which functions as the global umbrella organization for leading diamond bourses. Although neither Botswana nor Angola currently operates an independent diamond bourse, both governments pursued affiliate membership because diamonds remain strategically important to their national economies and policy priorities.

Initially joining as affiliate members, both countries are expected to transition to full WFDB membership at the World Diamond Congress 2026, scheduled to take place in Singapore. Participation at that congress will offer broader engagement with global stakeholders and opportunities to shape industry discussions.

Botswana Strengthens Focus on Natural Diamonds

As the world’s second-largest diamond producer, Botswana views WFDB membership as a chance to engage directly with international traders and industry bodies on core issues such as traceability, consumer confidence and the distinction between natural and lab-grown diamonds. The government aims to help ensure that policies and market practices support sustainable value from the natural-diamond sector.

Bogolo Kenewendo stated that joining the WFDB underscores Botswana’s commitment to responsible industry growth and enhanced global collaboration, aligning national interests with international best practices.

She emphasized that natural diamonds remain a vital source of sustainable economic value for Botswana and contribute significantly to the broader diamond sector’s long-term prospects.

Angola Expands International Industry Engagement

Diamantino Azevedo described Angola’s WFDB admission as an important milestone for deepening links with the international diamond trading community. The move is part of a broader effort to raise Angola’s profile and influence within the global market.

Angola has been working toward establishing a national diamond exchange for several years. By engaging with the WFDB, the country seeks to expand cooperation, attract responsible investment and increase its participation in global diamond trading and governance.

Closer Producer-Trader Collaboration Expected

Industry observers expect that including producer governments within the WFDB will encourage stronger alignment among mining nations, traders and diamond exchanges. This alignment is particularly timely as the industry intensifies its focus on transparency, ethical sourcing and the positioning of natural diamonds in luxury markets worldwide. Greater cooperation could support improved supply-chain traceability, harmonized standards and more effective responses to market changes, benefiting producers and traders alike.
