Christie’s to Auction the Largest Fancy Blue Diamond Ever Offered

Christie’s has announced the upcoming sale of the largest fancy blue diamond ever offered at auction, underscoring strong global interest in rare colored diamonds from collectors and investors.

The extraordinary gemstone, named the Azure Blue, weighs 31.62 carats and will headline Christie’s Magnificent Jewels sale in New York on June 9. The pear-shaped diamond is graded Fancy Blue by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and is described as potentially internally flawless.

Rare Blue Diamond Expected to Draw Global Attention

Christie’s has estimated the Azure Blue’s value between $6.5 million and $8.5 million. According to the auction house, diamonds that combine this size, clarity and natural blue color are exceptionally rare in the global gemstone market.

The auction announcement identifies the Azure Blue as one of the most important fancy blue diamonds to surface in recent years, highlighting the scarcity of large, high-quality blue stones and the significance such gems carry for collectors and investors alike.

Comparison With the Golconda Blue

This offering follows another high-profile blue diamond appearance earlier in the year, when Christie’s prepared to offer the 23.24-carat Golconda Blue in Geneva. That stone carried a much higher pre-sale estimate of $35 million to $50 million because it was graded Fancy Vivid Blue, indicating a deeper and more intense color saturation.

The Golconda Blue was withdrawn from that sale shortly before the auction at the consignor’s request, illustrating how such exceptional gems can see plans change rapidly based on owner decisions and market conditions.

Growing Demand for Exceptional Colored Diamonds

Claibourne Poindexter commented that Christie’s is honored to present this historic gemstone to a new generation of collectors, stressing the Azure Blue’s significance as the largest Fancy Blue diamond ever offered at auction.

Demand for rare colored diamonds, and blue diamonds in particular, continues to rise among high-net-worth buyers. Their limited supply, distinctive beauty and perceived investment potential have made them a prominent feature at major international jewelry auctions, attracting intense interest from private collectors, museums and investors seeking unique, hard-to-replicate assets.

As the market for colored diamonds evolves, stones like the Azure Blue serve as benchmarks for rarity and quality, often setting new standards for desirability and price expectations. The June sale in New York will be closely watched by the jewelry and investment communities as it may influence trends and valuations for other rare colored diamonds in the months ahead.
