India-USA Jewellery Trade Summit Kicks Off in Mumbai

Forging Futures: The Inaugural India-USA Jewellery Buyer-Seller Meet Ignites Bilateral Trade

A landmark moment for global jewellery trade unfolded in Mumbai with the inauguration of the first-ever India-USA Jewellery Buyer-Seller Meet (BSM). Hosted by The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), this pivotal event brought together 23 of India’s leading gem and jewellery manufacturer-exporters, all keen to strengthen their commercial ties with buyers predominantly representing the United States – the world’s largest jewellery market by value. The high-profile BSM, running from September 10th to 12th, served as a crucial platform for direct engagement and strategic collaboration, promising to redefine the contours of India-US trade relations in the gems and jewellery sector.

The significance of this inaugural meet cannot be overstated. It marks a concerted effort by the Indian industry to not only maintain its robust presence in the US market but also to expand its footprint, leveraging India’s rich heritage of craftsmanship combined with modern manufacturing prowess. The BSM format, meticulously curated by GJEPC over the years, has consistently proven to be an effective model for fostering enduring business relationships, allowing for intimate interactions and a deeper understanding of market demands and supplier capabilities. This targeted approach ensures that the foundation laid during these intensive sessions translates into sustained partnerships and mutual growth.

A Confluence of Global Jewellery Leaders

The event attracted an impressive delegation of 32 buyers, a diverse group comprising prominent retailers, wholesalers, and distributors, alongside representatives from both large and small chains. The majority of these esteemed guests, 23 to be precise, hailed from the United States, underscoring the meet’s primary focus. Among them were officials from some of America’s most recognizable jewellery retail giants, including Kays Jewellers, Zales, People’s Jewellers, and Ben Bridge Jewelers, indicating the high caliber of interest from the US market. Complementing the strong American presence, nine additional buyers traveled from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Germany, and New Zealand, adding an international dimension to the proceedings and highlighting the global appeal of Indian jewellery.

The Indian contingent of exhibitors showcased a broad geographical representation, reflecting the widespread excellence within the country’s jewellery manufacturing landscape. While a significant number of participants hailed from Mumbai, a well-established hub for gems and jewellery, and Jaipur, renowned for its colored gemstones and traditional designs, the meet also featured jewellers from burgeoning centers such as Surat, Pune, Nagpur, and Uttar Pradesh. This diverse participation underscored India’s comprehensive capability to produce a wide array of jewellery, from intricate diamond pieces to exquisite gold designs, catering to varied international tastes and market segments.

Strengthening Bilateral Trade: India’s Growing Influence in the US Market

The India-USA Jewellery BSM strategically targets the American market, a relationship that has demonstrated impressive growth in recent years. India’s total exports of gems and jewellery to the US surged by 16%, reaching an impressive US$10.48 billion in FY19, a significant jump from US$9.064 billion in FY16. This upward trajectory firmly establishes the US as a cornerstone of India’s global jewellery export strategy, accounting for a substantial 26.3% of India’s total gem and jewellery exports, which stood at US$39.76 billion in FY19.

Delving deeper into the export categories, India’s prowess in various segments becomes evident. Exports of gold jewellery studded with diamonds to the US amounted to US$1.37 billion, while plain gold jewellery and other studded gold jewellery contributed US$290.62 million in FY19. However, the largest contributor to this impressive trade volume remains Cut & Polished diamonds, with exports to the US reaching US$8.31 billion in FY19, marking a robust 26% increase from FY16. These figures not only highlight India’s dominance in diamond processing but also its growing capacity to deliver high-value finished jewellery products to the discerning American consumer.

Capitalizing on Global Dynamics: The US-China Trade Scenario

During the inaugural ceremony, GJEPC Vice Chairman Colin Shah eloquently articulated India’s pivotal role in the global jewellery supply chain, noting that “India is the largest supplier of gems and jewellery products to the US, exceeding the combined exports of both China and Thailand to your country.” This statement underscores India’s unparalleled position as a reliable and high-volume supplier. Furthermore, Shah pointed out that ongoing global trade dynamics, particularly the trade tariff war between the US and China, presented an unexpected yet significant opportunity for India to further augment its market share. The imposition of higher tariffs on Chinese jewellery products indirectly creates a more favorable environment for Indian manufacturers, fostering scope for increased exports and deeper market penetration.

A Vision for Exquisite Craftsmanship and Sustainable Growth

GJEPC Chairman Pramod Agrawal emphasized the unique allure of Indian jewellery, inviting US buyers to “discover the intrinsically crafted pieces woven out of tales of romance, creativity, heritage, charisma & elegance to say the least.” He assured attendees that GJEPC’s member exporters would showcase an exquisite array of contemporary jewellery pieces, each resonating with India’s long-standing forte in curating and crafting fine jewellery. This vision extends beyond mere transactions; it aims to immerse buyers in the rich narrative and artistic legacy that underpins every piece of Indian jewellery.

Colin Shah, in his welcoming address, provided a concise yet comprehensive overview of the Indian jewellery industry, highlighting GJEPC’s instrumental role in facilitating its export growth. He articulated that India’s contemporary jewellery industry is built upon a foundation of centuries-old heritage in design and craftsmanship, a legacy that continues to inspire innovation. Indian jewellers are not merely suppliers but “ready learners,” committed to enhancing the value proposition they offer to US buyers. Shah assured the delegation that even if the showcased jewellery didn’t precisely match their immediate needs, Indian exhibitors possessed the adaptability and skill to understand specific requirements and custom-create desired products, reinforcing India’s reputation for flexibility and client-centric solutions.

Commitment to Responsibility and Industry Best Practices

A crucial aspect of India’s appeal as a global jewellery partner lies in its unwavering commitment to responsible business practices. GJEPC Vice Chairman Shah unequivocally reaffirmed that the Indian industry adheres strictly to ethical sourcing and sustainable operations. He proudly noted India’s status as a founding member of the Kimberley Process (KP), an international certification scheme that prevents the flow of conflict diamonds, and highlighted that India currently holds the prestigious position of KP Chair. Furthermore, GJEPC has been actively engaged with the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), a leading standard-setting organization for the global jewellery and watch industry, ensuring ethical and responsible practices throughout the supply chain. Shah confirmed that nearly all prominent Indian jewellery companies have secured RJC certification, signaling a robust dedication to transparency, integrity, and sustainability that resonates deeply with conscious consumers and ethical businesses worldwide.

The importance of direct communication and feedback was also a key theme. Shah urged buyers to share their insights and experiences with the organizers at the conclusion of the show. This feedback mechanism is vital for GJEPC, enabling them to continuously refine and improve the buyer experience at subsequent events. Moreover, it assists individual companies in identifying potential suppliers perfectly aligned with their specific needs, fostering a dynamic ecosystem of continuous improvement and mutually beneficial relationships.

The Efficacy of the Buyer-Seller Meet Format

The structured Buyer-Seller Meet format, as endorsed by GJEPC, offers distinct advantages for both buyers and sellers, making it an invaluable tool for international trade development. GJEPC’s coordinators, Nancy Robey and Holly Granosfsky for the USA, and Jeremy Keight for Australia, also addressed the inaugural session, briefly outlining these benefits. For buyers, the BSM provides a unique opportunity for concentrated access to a curated selection of top-tier manufacturers, streamlining the sourcing process. They can engage in direct, one-on-one meetings, discuss specific requirements, negotiate terms, and build personal rapport, all within a focused and efficient environment. This direct interaction eliminates intermediaries, fosters transparency, and allows for a deeper understanding of product quality, manufacturing capabilities, and ethical standards.

For Indian manufacturers and exporters, the BSM offers invaluable exposure to key international markets. It enables them to showcase their latest collections, understand evolving global trends, receive direct feedback on their products, and forge strategic alliances with prominent international buyers. This direct market intelligence is crucial for product development, innovation, and aligning production with international demand. The long-term business ties established through such meets are foundational for sustainable export growth and for enhancing India’s global reputation as a reliable and innovative jewellery manufacturing hub.

The Future Horizon: A Thriving India-USA Jewellery Partnership

The first India-USA Jewellery Buyer-Seller Meet is more than just an event; it represents a strategic milestone in the enduring trade relationship between these two nations. By fostering direct connections, promoting high-quality craftsmanship, ensuring ethical practices, and encouraging dialogue, GJEPC is paving the way for a future of enhanced collaboration and mutual prosperity. The success of this inaugural meet lays a strong foundation for future initiatives, promising continued growth, innovation, and a vibrant exchange of exquisite jewellery between India and the United States. As India continues to solidify its position as a global leader in gems and jewellery, events like the BSM are instrumental in translating its rich heritage and modern capabilities into a compelling value proposition for the world’s most significant markets.
